I had trouble adding this onto Trip advisor, but if you are going to havana and want to stay at an AMAZING place, with the nicest people ever (they speak good enough english to get by). It felt like a museum with incredible high ceilings, they have 2 bedrooms, a nice big clean bathroom, and for an extra 5CUC they can make you breakfast.
Cost is 30-40CUC.
I stayed there in February 2016 with 2 friends. Be sure to book in advance as Jan-Feb is busy.

And in Havana, take the city bus to get around! It cost us 10 cents for 3 people 1 way!
Also, coming from varadero you can book the local coach style bus for 10CUC. I think its called Viazul and it was 3 blocks from the Mar Del Sur hotel. Maybe on 33rd street around near the highway. Or a taxi would have cost us 45CUC (15CUC per person), which maybe be more fun because you can tell them to stop wherever you want and see more.
Good salsa clubs in Havana: Club 1830, or casa de la musica.
