I had trouble adding this onto Trip advisor, but if you are going to havana and want to stay at an AMAZING place, with the nicest people ever (they speak good enough english to get by). It felt like a museum with incredible high ceilings, they have 2 bedrooms, a nice big clean bathroom, and for an extra 5CUC they can make you breakfast.
Cost is 30-40CUC.
I stayed there in February 2016 with 2 friends. Be sure to book in advance as Jan-Feb is busy.
Name: Hospedaje 258
Address: street number 21 (between streets I and J) and the house number is 258.
In spanish: Calle 21, No. 258 entre I y J.
This is in the nicer part of town.
And in Havana, take the city bus to get around! It cost us 10 cents for 3 people 1 way!
Also, coming from varadero you can book the local coach style bus for 10CUC. I think its called Viazul and it was 3 blocks from the Mar Del Sur hotel. Maybe on 33rd street around near the highway. Or a taxi would have cost us 45CUC (15CUC per person), which maybe be more fun because you can tell them to stop wherever you want and see more.
Good salsa clubs in Havana: Club 1830, or casa de la musica.
When health has gotten to the point of affecting children… and the fact that we are still not seeing changes... is shocking. Here is a documentary that will get your blood bubbling.

The best part about searching gluten free in New York City is that most places that do accommodate this allergy are often organic and environmentally friendly.
On my 4 day trip, here are some places that I recommend since its really not easy to find good and affordable in NYC.
My choice:beef burger + tapioca burger bun + red cabbage slaw
About the Menu: you either choose a pre-assembled burger OR choose your own bun, meat (beef, chicken, bison, boar, vegan options, etc!!), toppings, extensive array of cool sauces and sides. I recommend building your own if your indecisive. Prices: depends on how many toppings you add. I think burgers start around 9$, but with added toppings and tip, expect to spend closer to 20$. They do not come with a side. Very reasonable! My Suggestions: I made the mistake to get "well done" because it was a bit dry, but I am sure it has wonderful potential otherwise. Also, get the sweet potato fries! Yum! Slaw was great too. The GF bun: FAN-FRIGGEN-TASTIC! They nailed this recipe. Its fluffy, toasted nicely, great flavour, texture… everything you could hope for.
*100% made in house *never frozen *"all natural and organic whenever possible" *compostable packaging
My Choice: Teriyaki Salmon + brown rice + carrot / greens salad
About the Menu: Choose your protein, then white or brown rice, then kind of salad dressing (only one dressing is GF). They also had fresh young coconuts in the soda fridge! Prices: Expect to spend around 11-15$ My Comments: So this was not a mind blower, and my little piece of salmon there had quite a big chunk of burnt bit, BUT, I would still come back. Searching gluten free is hectic enough, and as a fast food, I would choose this any day. The sauce had a very unique taste, a sweet sour tang. My brother loved it a lot. I think I would have to go back and try the other meats. I also like that the portions are not American-expected-enormous. I also love the short grain korean style brown rice! Sitting: it is a VERY small place, so go over to central park and eat there!
My brothers choice: the combo of beef and chicken - he loved it!
3 Locations in NYC (also available in other states)
3) I heart Chipotle's
BEST FAST FOOD OF ALL!!! *Organic *Family farmed *local *see their website for details
I highly recommend watching the documentary on Netflix on how the company started, and to learn more about their values of sustainability. Or here on Youtube:
Menu: you can always get scrumptious meat, rice, and tons of wonderful sauces and vegetables. Their guacamole is wonderful! Coming from Montreal where good mexican cuisine is no where to be found, this is a little piece of heaven. Do not worry about big line ups: this is the fastest, most organized assembly line I have ever seen. I think there were 40 people ahead of us in line and we waited maybe only 8-10 minutes. Prices: around 10-12$
My Choice: Carnitas (pork) + brown rice + guacamole + black beans + salsa +salsa verde + corn slaw + lettuce + TLC
4) My first Gluten Free Beer: Daura I was so sad that beer was out the window, but not anymore! I tried this beer and it was incredible! I would even order it over regular beers. Too bad in Montreal you can only find GF beers at the grocery store and not in bars. I am kind of sick of cider…
Other places I checked out but did not eat there:
1) Pala - gluten free pizza (more expensive, starting at 16$) 2) Tu-Lus Gluten free bakery (very very small display window, mostly cupcakes) 3) The Hummus Place - looks awesome!! sad we did not try 4) Little Skips (brooklyn) - looked cute! - GF sandwich bread

Bean Bubbles
Gluten free, dairy free, and nut free!
Beans inside it: black beans, kidney beans and lentils!
We decided to venture out to Santa Barbara for 2 days, so we could get outside the city and get a taste of the Pacific coast drive heading north of LA.
After doing numerous wine tastings, my main question was inquiring about the best Mexican joint in the city. We were referred to 'La Super-Rica Taqueria.
I have to say, I have tried soft corn tortillas here in Montreal, and was so discouraged by the mealy off taste. But LA taught me that they are scrumptious when done properly!!
1st good sign: Big line up outside.
Lady pressing fresh tortillas
So I started myself with the most refreshing, no sugar added, watermelon juice with nice mini chunks of watermelon added inside. OH SO GOOD! on a hot day!
Marinated pork on 3 soft corn tortillas, with a generous amount of green chili, cheese, and a side of avocado. SCRUMPTIOUS
Soft corn marinated porn tortilla with a side of guac! Mmmmm.
'Tamal de verduras': Vegetarian tamale with, chayote, corn, zucchini, potato, chile pasilla strips, cheese and béchamel type sauce. It was good, but not AS exciting as the other items!
We decided to make a pit stop on Venice Boulevard because the monthly flea market was up in a large parking lot. Right outside was Valentino's Taco's food truck, offering inexpensive Mexican food options.
Pork Taco, excellente!
MASSIVE, vegetarian burrito with the best black bean and rice mixture I have ever had. It came in a bag with some fried tortilla chips too! I think this only was 4$!! Enough to feed 2.
Yep, this is the high school where Grease was filmed!
With the help of the 'truxmap' App on the iPod Touch, we were able to find the Buttermilk truck on Venice Boulevard. I was so excited by the look of this creamy welcoming friendly truck, and curious as to what heart clogging options were offered. Did you know? Buttermilk is actually low in fat, containing around 5g, just like2% milk. In the process of churning butter, buttermilk is the leftover liquid. You can see that visually for yourself if you over whip 35% cream. You will extract a big solid clump and a thin liquid as a result. Why did I think this truck would be heart clogging then? Because buttermilk is a magical ingredient in southern cooking, for baked goods like biscuits, and battering items for the deep fryer. It contributes some dairy fat, and a nice tang from its fermented nature.
We arrived at night, so that was our selection.
Fried Chicken with Cinnamon Waffles.
I cannot even explain to you how scrumptious this was!
For some reason, the combination of the savoury chicken, with the cinnamon waffle, and the maple syrup...a foodsplotion in your mouth! Absolutely amazing.
This is too heart clogging for a full meal, but definitely fun to share as a snack!
